Darling in the FranXX - Episode 5 Review

Darling in the FranXX Zero Two Red Pupil

Darling in the FranXX's focus on plot development and visual symbolism provided the most striking addition yet.

The Parasites seem to be quite cheerful from their latest victory. After Hiro realizes he can pilot Strelitzia, he cheerfully interacts with Zero Two and the other team members. However, Hiro's dark secret comes to light.

Thus far, the side characters in FranXX are used solely as comedic relief, but this fails and only wastes time. For example, this episode starts off with the team members bantering, providing a soothing atmosphere. These are the few times where these characters are actually used, and these interactions aren’t even entertaining, they’re annoying. Hopefully these characters get some development in the next twenty episodes.

Darling in the FranXX Parade

The highlight of this installment is the development of the plot, giving Hiro an unexpected ultimatum. While everyone thought Zero Two and Hiro were perfectly compatible, it seemed as if he was being devoured by her just like everyone else. When Goro figures this out, he’s conflicted on whether or not to tell anyone. It’s incredibly interesting how this plays out, showing that Hiro desperately wants to be useful while Goro just wants to save him.

Additionally, the problems that develop between Zero Two and Ichigo get more interesting. It seems Zero Two knows of the pain Hiro is going through, but she doesn’t seem to care too much. As Ichigo confronts Zero Two, the question of her humanity is brought up. It’s exciting to imagine where the series can go with this idea, questioning whether the Parasites are more human than Zero Two.

Darling in the FranXX Concerned

The visual symbolism is also fascinating, as enigmatic cuts provide a mysterious atmosphere. Before it’s revealed that Hiro is sick, we constantly see wide shots of water dripping down into a puddle. It’s finally revealed that this is Hiro’s sweat dripping into the sink, burning up from his illness.

The latest episode of Darling in the FranXX is full of gripping plot points and compelling visual symbolism. The story developments are exciting, as the conflicts between the characters and themselves are slowly coming to light.
